Does Ube Have Caffeine? And What Else Is Actually in It

Short answer: no. Ube contains no caffeine whatsoever.

That is not a technicality or a "very little" answer. Ube is a root vegetable. Caffeine is produced by a specific and fairly small set of plants, mostly coffee, tea, cacao, guarana, and a handful of others. Yams are not among them. A pure ube latte has exactly as much caffeine as a glass of milk.

This turns out to be one of the more commercially useful facts about the ingredient, so it is worth unpacking properly.

Why this matters more than it sounds

Almost every signature drink on an Indian cafe menu is built on caffeine. Coffee, obviously. Matcha, which our own testing puts at 43mg per 2g serving for Yabukita and 54.6mg for Saemidori under IS 16027:2012. Hojicha, lower at 23.6mg but still not zero. Chai. Even most bubble tea.

That leaves a real gap. Every cafe has customers who want something interesting after 4pm, or who are avoiding caffeine for their own reasons, or who are ordering for children. Historically the options have been juices, sodas, or a hot chocolate, none of which feel like they belong on a menu built around craft.

An ube latte is the first genuinely photogenic, genuinely premium feeling, caffeine free option most cafes have had. That is a specific commercial hole it fills, and it is a big part of why it has moved onto menus so quickly.

If you do want caffeine in it, adding a shot of espresso makes it an ube dirty latte, which is now a menu item in its own right in a lot of places.

What ube actually contains

Per roughly 100g of cooked purple yam, you are looking at a starchy root vegetable that is primarily carbohydrate, with a meaningful amount of dietary fibre, potassium, and vitamin C, plus smaller amounts of vitamins A and E, copper, and vitamin B6.

None of that is remarkable on its own. It is broadly what you would expect from any decent root vegetable. The part that gets the attention is the pigment.

The anthocyanin question

The purple in ube comes from anthocyanins, natural plant pigments in the flavonoid family. They are the same compounds that colour blueberries, blackberries, elderberries, and red cabbage.

Anthocyanins are genuinely well studied as antioxidants, and there is a real body of research examining them in laboratory and animal settings, including work on antioxidant, anti inflammatory, and gut microbiome effects. Reviews of purple root vegetable pigments have flagged a range of potential activity.

Here is the honest read, though. Most of that research is laboratory work, often at concentrations well above what you would get from drinking a latte, and it examines isolated compounds rather than the ingredient as consumed. The gap between "anthocyanins show activity in a lab" and "drinking ube does something specific for your health" is wide, and most marketing in this category simply drives straight across it.

So: ube contains compounds that are legitimately interesting and legitimately studied. It is also a sweet purple drink, usually served with milk and often with added sugar. Both of those things are true at once, and we would rather say that than sell you the first one and quietly omit the second.

One myth worth killing

You will occasionally see claims that ube supports hormone balance, usually referencing diosgenin, a compound found in yams that is a chemical precursor to progesterone.

It is a precursor in a laboratory, not in a person. The human body does not convert dietary diosgenin into progesterone. Germany's federal nutrition centre has been explicit about this. If you have seen ube marketed on a hormonal balance angle, that is the claim being stretched past what it can hold.

Where the sugar actually comes from

Worth being clear about this, because "caffeine free" and "root vegetable" together can create an impression that an ube latte is a light drink.

Pure ube powder has no added sugar. Ours does not, and a good one should not. But ube's natural sweetness is mild, and most cafe recipes add sweetener, condensed milk, or a syrup to push the flavour forward. The traditional Filipino preparation, halaya, is made with condensed milk precisely because ube on its own is subtle.

So the powder is not the sugar. The recipe usually is. That is a menu decision, not an ingredient property, and it is entirely within your control as an operator.
