What Is Hojicha?

Hojicha is roasted Japanese green tea, not a separate plant and not a lesser version of matcha. The roasting is the entire story: it strips out bitterness, adds warmth and nuttiness through browning, and cuts the caffeine roughly in half compared to matcha. If matcha's vegetal intensity isn't for you, hojicha is worth trying before you write off Japanese tea powder altogether.
