Does Matcha Affect Your Health? Everything You Need to Know Before You Start
Matcha is showing up on café menus, in wellness routines, and across social media at a pace that is only accelerating. With that comes a wave of questions and a fair amount of misinformation. Here are straight answers.
Is matcha safe to drink every day?
Yes, for most people. Matcha has been consumed daily in Japan for centuries. A 2g serving contains approximately 43mg of caffeine, well within the 400mg daily limit recommended for healthy adults. As with any caffeinated drink, some people are more sensitive than others. Start with one cup a day and see how your body responds.
Can matcha cause anxiety or jitters?
This concern usually comes from people who have had a bad experience with coffee. Matcha is different. The L-Theanine in every cup counteracts the overstimulating effects of caffeine and promotes calm alertness instead. Most people find matcha does not cause the jitteriness associated with coffee. If you are highly caffeine sensitive, matcha will still affect you, just more gently. If you do experience anxiety from matcha, reduce your serving size or switch to hojicha, which contains significantly less caffeine at 11.8mg per gram.
Does matcha affect sleep?
If you drink it late in the afternoon or evening it can, particularly if you are caffeine sensitive. The same rules that apply to coffee apply here. If you want a hot drink in the evening without caffeine concerns, hojicha is the better choice. For most people, matcha consumed before midday has no effect on sleep.
Is matcha safe during pregnancy?
Most guidelines recommend limiting caffeine to 200mg per day during pregnancy. A 2g serving of matcha contains approximately 43mg, so moderate consumption fits within recommended limits. The high EGCG content has been flagged in some research as potentially problematic in very high quantities during pregnancy. The standard advice is to consult your doctor and keep it to one cup a day or less.
How much should you drink per day?
One to two cups is the sweet spot for most people. This delivers meaningful L-Theanine and EGCG benefits without overconsumption of caffeine. Some people drink up to three without issue. There is no evidence that moderate daily matcha consumption causes harm in healthy adults.
Does matcha stain teeth?
Less than coffee and black tea. Matcha contains tannins which can contribute to staining over time, but to a much lesser degree. Rinsing with water after drinking helps.
Can matcha interact with medications?
Matcha contains Vitamin K, which can interact with blood thinners like warfarin. If you are on blood-thinning medication, speak to your doctor before adding matcha to your routine. The caffeine may also interact with certain stimulant medications. If you have a specific health condition or are on medication, check with your doctor as you would with any dietary change.
